The Course

Architect Jack Kidwell, past president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, has often stated, “Hickory Hills is located on the best piece of land that I have ever been given to design and build a golf course.” Hickory Hills follows the natural contours of the land, up, down, left and right. You will often play every club in your bag on this scenic, mentally challenging and never-ending fun place to play a round of golf.

Designed by renowned Architect Jack Kidwell, past president for the American Society of Golf Course Architects, the 18-hole (plus one for 19 total golf holes) masterpiece features something for every golfer. From a seasoned pro to a newer golfer, Hickory Hills offers a challenging but fair tree lined layout with seven different tee box playing combinations measuring from 6889 to 4635 yards.

Hole #1

Par: 4 Men's Handicap: 5 Ladies' Handicap: 5

Hole Description:

The opening tee shot at HHGC is been voted the most challenging opening the shot in all of Columbus due to the trees on both sides of the hole. However, once you have played the hole a few times you realize there is more fairway out there than appears to the eye.

Hole #2

Par: 5 Men's Handicap: 11 Ladies' Handicap: 9

Hole Description:

A double dogleg Par 5 with a generous landing area off the tee. Big hitters can go for it in two, while strategic players can layup between the fairway bunkers and play a wedge shot to the flattest green on the course.

Hole #3

Par: 3 Men's Handicap: 17 Ladies' Handicap: 13

Hole Description:

A mid range Par 3 with trouble surrounding the green that slopes from back to front. Leave you ball below the hole for a birdie chance.

Hole #4

Par: 4 Men's Handicap: 1 Ladies' Handicap: 1

Hole Description:

Pay no attention to the short yardage as hole #4 is the #1 HDCP hole on the course. A divided fairway and a sharp uphill 90 degree dogleg right to an undulating putting surface. Par here is a GREAT score!

Hole #5

Par: 4 Men's Handicap: 13 Ladies' Handicap: 17

Hole Description:

Welcome relief at Hole #5 after playing Hole #4. Bomb your driver and hit it close for a birdie on this scoring opportunity hole.

Hole #6

Par: 4 Men's Handicap: 3 Ladies' Handicap: 7

Hole Description:

The longest Par 4 on the front nine. Bunkers guard the fairway landing area on both sides making the tee shot difficult. Once you find the fairway chances are you still have a long iron or hybrid into a difficult to hit and hold putting surface. If your going to miss on this approach shot make sure you come up short as left, right and long are dead.

Hole #7

Par: 3 Men's Handicap: 15 Ladies' Handicap: 15

Hole Description:

Hole #7 plays uphill so be sure to add the yardage to take the correct club off the tee. Best to be short of this green as hitting it over is a sure bogey. Once on the green do your best to leave it below the hole so you can putt uphill.

Hole #8

Par: 5 Men's Handicap: 7 Ladies' Handicap: 3

Hole Description:

Another great Par 5. Long hitters can go for this smaller green in two shots - but be sure not to go long or left or a double bogey is in your future. The strategic player can lay up to the flat area just inside 100 yards (be sure to favor the left side of the fairway) for a clean wedge shot into a rolly-polly putting surface.

Hole #9

Par: 4 Men's Handicap: 9 Ladies' Handicap: 11

Hole Description:

Players should place their tee shot to the right side of the fairway to avoid the large tree that appears to be in the fairway from the tee box. An easy wedge from the right fairway and keeping your ball below the flagstick will lead to an easy par at Hole #9.

Hole #10

Par: 4 Men's Handicap: 8 Ladies' Handicap: 10

Hole Description:

Standing on the tee box it looks like there is no where to hit your tee shot. However there is more fairway then appears to the golfers eye. A long iron or "fairway finder" tee shot will lead to a short iron shot over a well bunker guarded putting green.

Hole #11

Par: 4 Men's Handicap: 16 Ladies' Handicap: 8

Hole Description:

RISK / REWARD at Hole #11. Big hitters can drive the green at #11. However if you miss your line OB left and water short and right of the putting surface will grab the golf ball. The best play here is to find the fairway off the tee with a long iron and hit your approach shot over the pond onto a large putting surface take your two putt par and move on to #12.

Hole #12

Par: 5 Men's Handicap: 2 Ladies' Handicap: 2

Hole Description:

One of the most photographed holes at HH. Standing on the putting green and looking back at the fairway you can see how special HHGC is. Keep your tee shot down the left center, lay up short of the creek for your second shot and then over and up to the elevated green. The approach shot from down in the fairway to the uphill green is one of the most difficult shots on the course.

Hole #13

Par: 3 Men's Handicap: 10 Ladies' Handicap: 14

Hole Description:

Hole #13 is the most difficult Par 3 on the course. A long tee shot over water to a green that sits at an odd angle for incoming shots will have you working hard to make par. If your afraid of the water and not a strong bunker player there is a bailout area to the left of the putting surface...there is no shame in aiming for the bail out, chipping on the green and try to make that putt to save par.

Hole #14

Par: 4 Men's Handicap: 4 Ladies' Handicap: 4

Hole Description:

Get out the driver and swing away. This stout Par 4 will require your best tee shot of the day. Avoid the fairway bunkers off the tee and hit a mid to long iron approach to an elevated putting surface. Anything long, left or right on this approach will lead to a big number. Par is a FANTASTIC SCORE on hole #14.

Hole #15

Par: 4 Men's Handicap: 14 Ladies' Handicap: 16

Hole Description:

Coming off Holes 12,13,&14 Hole #15 is a sight for sore eyes. A big fairway and a big tee shot will leave a short approach into a mostly flat putting surface. This is a birdie hole!

Hole #16

Par: 3 Men's Handicap: 18 Ladies' Handicap: 18

Hole Description:

A great par three hole as you make the final push to the clubhouse. Be sure to pay attention to the pin placement before teeing off. This green has a ridge running in the middle of it. Pins cut on the right half are birdie placements. Pins cut on the left side of the green can lead to big numbers. Pay attention and try and place your tee shot near the middle of the green for the best chance of a par.

Hole #17

Par: 4 Men's Handicap: 12 Ladies' Handicap: 6

Hole Description:

There is water on the right side of the fairway that cant be seen from the tee box. Playing a tee shot off the left fairway bunker will lead to a wide open approach shot into a large and receptive putting surface. A birdie here can go a long way in your match!

Hole #18

Par: 4 Men's Handicap: 6 Ladies' Handicap: 12

Hole Description:

Hole #18 at HH is one of the toughest finishing holes in all of Columbus. There is a DROP OFF at the end of the fairway so please pay attention to the markers on the tee boxes that say how far it is to the end of the fairway. Make sure to favor the left-center of this fairway off the tee. The approach is over a creek and a valley to an angled two-tier putting green. Make sure to take enough club to carry the bunker and you will have a great chance for a par and par will be good enough to win most matches on this tough finishing hole. Now its time to shake hands and head to the outdoor patio for a cold refreshing beverage!
